Shabab Al Ahli secured a crucial 2-1 win over Sharjah in a highly anticipated Matchweek 6 clash of the ADNOC Pro League on Sunday night at Rashid Stadium.
The win helped Shabab Al Ahli to claim first place in the standings with 18 points, surpassing Sharjah, who remain in second place with 15 points.
In the 6th minute, Shabab Al Ahli forward Sardar Azmoun received a clever pass from Cartabia inside Sharjah’s box but missed the target, wasting an early chance to take the lead.
Moments later, Caio Lucas of Sharjah fired a powerful shot just wide of the left post, narrowly missing an opportunity to put his team ahead.
Shabab Al Ahli continued to apply pressure, coming close to scoring in the 37th minute with a powerful header from a corner, which sailed just over the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Adel Alhosani kept Sharjah in the game, denying a thunderous strike from Yuri Cesar in the 44th minute, ensuring the first half ended goalless.
The second half began with Shabab Al Ahli maintaining their attacking intensity.
In the 55th minute, Sardar Azmoun broke the deadlock with a brilliant long-range strike from just outside the box, giving Shabab Al Ahli a 1-0 lead.
Sharjah responded with urgency, and in the 73rd minute, Ousmane Camara unleashed a powerful shot from the right wing.
However, Shabab Al Ahli’s goalkeeper Hamad Abdullah made a crucial save, with the ball then hitting the crossbar to keep the hosts in front.
Shabab Al Ahli doubled their lead in the 87th minute when they were awarded a penalty, calmly converted by Federico Cartabia to make it 2-0.
Sharjah refused to back down and continued pressing until the final moments.
In the 97th minute of stoppage time, Guilherme Sucigan found the back of the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
However, the visitors ran out of time, and the match ended with Shabab Al Ahli clinching a hard-fought 2-1 victory, securing the top spot in the ADNOC Pro League standings.
