Al Wahda go second after 3-0 win over 10-man Ajman

Al Wahda moved to second place above Al Nasr on goal difference after defeating Ajman 3-0 at Al Nahyan Stadium in matchweek 6 of the Arabian Gulf League on Saturday.

Al Wahda netted two quickfire goals as Yahya Al Ghassani opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before doubling their lead through Gianluca Muniz three minutes later.

Al Ghassani connected to Ismail Matar’s corner kick inside the box and his initial effort was saved by keeper Ali Al Hosani, but he latched on the rebound to put his side 1-0 up.

The Clarets needed only three minutes to double their lead when Muniz sent a long-range left-footed effort that nestled into the bottom corner of the net, leaving Al Hosani helpless.

To add insult to injury, Ajman’s defender Darlington Emmanuel was sent off after being shown a straight red card four minutes from halftime. The VAR review showed that he brought down Al Wahda's Tim Matavz who was through on goal.

Al Wahda were handed a golden opportunity to seal the win when they were awarded a penalty four minutes after the restart. However, Al Hosani pulled off a save to deny Matar’s penalty kick and keep his side’s comeback hopes alive.

The hosts kept pushing in search of a third goal, but Al Hosani continued to impress as he pulled off a double save to deny Matar and Tahnoon Al Zaabi in the 65th minute.

Al Zaabi then found the back of the net with a fine goal three minutes later, but it was ruled out for an offside.

Al Wahda’s efforts paid off as they netted their third of the night 11 minutes from time to put the win beyond any doubt. Al Zaabi sent a long pass that found goalscorer Al Ghassani inside the box, the latter then crossed the ball to Mohamed Barqesh who tapped home.

Matar came close to making it 4-0 during injury time, but his stunning individual effort was saved by Al Hosani.

Al Wahda earned their fourth win and raised their tally to 13 points in second place. Meanwhile, Ajman remain winless and are frozen on two points in 12th position.
