Own goal lifts Fujairah over Ajman

Waleed Al Yamahi’s own goal was the difference as Ajman fell to a 1-0 defeat against Fujairah at Fujairah Stadium in the first leg of the Arabian Gulf Cup playoff round on Thursday, which was held under the slogan “We commit until we succeed”.

Ajman were first to threaten Fujairah, when Gustavo Di Mauro cut inside, but his left-footed strike was saved by Abdullah Al Tamimi in the 16th minute.

The Oranges continued to be the better side and around the half-hour mark, Issam Shaitit went up the left flank and squared the ball to Isam Faiz, however, the number 20's effort was denied by Al Tamimi.

Against the run of play, the Wolves broke the deadlock in the 36th minute through an own goal by Al Yamahi. Farley Rosa released Khalil Khamis up the left wing and the winger sent a low cross to Mohamed Firas, whose shot crept into the back of the net after it got deflected off the keeper and Al Tamimi.

The second half got off to a very slow start, as both teams failed to create any real chances on goal.

The Oranges created the first real threat in the 76th minute, when Di Mauro received the ball up the right wing and sent a brilliant cross towards William Owusu, who failed to reach it.

Two minutes later, Owusu was once again at heart of attack for the visitors. The Belgian got the ball near the edge of the box, however, his right-footed shot went just wide.

Ajman will be aiming to turn things around when they host Fujairah at Rashid Bin Saeed Stadium in the second leg on November 12.
