Matchweek 13 roundup: Sharjah consolidate position at top, Bani Yas move to third place

Sharjah finished off the first half of the Arabian Gulf League season at the top of the standings, while Hatta continued to linger at the bottom.

 

Matchweek 13 saw the King edge Ittihad Kalba 1-0 at home, thanks to Otabek Shukurov 36th minute winner, as they consolidated their position at the top on 32 points. They extended the gap with second-placed Al Jazira to five points, after the Pride of Abu Dhabi fell to a surprise 3-0 defeat against Khorfakkan at Saqr Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi Stadium in a match that saw Ramon Lopes net a brace and Bruno Lamas score once.

 

Meanwhile, Bani Yas jumped to third place on 26 points, after beating Al Wahda 2-0 at Al Nahyan Stadium, with Gaston Suarez and Joao Pedro scoring a goal in each half.

 

Al Nasr dropped to fourth place on 24 points after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Shabab Al Ahli at Rashid Stadium, thanks to Yahya Al Ghassani’s winning goal in the 50th minute.

 

They are one point above fifth-placed Al Ain who edged Hatta 1-0 at Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium after Salem Abdulla netted the winner in the 43rd minute.

 

Meanwhile, Shabab Al Ahli, who returned to winning ways, moved to sixth place. They are tied on 19 points with Al Wahda and Kalba, who sit seventh and eighth, respectively.

 

Al Wasl and Al Dhafra played out a 1-1 draw, as Pedro Conde cancelled out Joao Figueiredo’s opener to share the spoils at Hamdan Bin Zayed Stadium. Al Wasl now have 17 points, one above 10th-placed Al Dhafra.

 

Khorfakkan’s fourth win of the season over Al Jazira raised their tally to 14 points in 11th place.

 

Ajman claimed their first win of the season as they defeated Fujairah 2-1 at Rashid Bin Saeed Stadium to raise their tally to six points in 13th place. They are one point behind Fujairah, who sit 12th.

 

Meanwhile, Hatta continue to linger at the bottom of the standings on two points only after suffering their 11th defeat of the season.
