Matchweek 14 preview: Exciting matchups to open second half of season

The Arabian Gulf League action returns this weekend, as matchweek 14 kicks off on Friday with Ajman facing Al Dhafra, Hatta playing against Al Wahda and Al Jazira hosting Al Nasr.

The action resumes on Saturday with four games, which will see Khorfakkan welcome Al Ain, Shabab Al Ahli face Ittihad Kalba, Bani Yas clash with Al Wasl and Sharjah play against Fujairah.

The first two matches of the week will kick off at 5:30pm and will see Ajman clash with Al Dhafra at Rashid Bin Saeed Stadium and Hatta welcome Al Wahda at Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium.

Despite their disappointing position in the relegation zone, Ajman will be in high spirits and will be looking to keep the momentum alive after beating Fujairah 2-1 in matchweek 13 and earning their first victory of the season. The Oranges raised their tally to six points yet remained in the penultimate position. They will also be hoping to avenge their big 4-1 defeat to Al Dhafra in the opening week of the season. Meanwhile, Al Dhafra will be looking to return to winning ways after falling to two defeats and a draw in the past three matchweeks, which left them in 10th place on 16 points.

At the same time, Hatta will be facing an uphill task against Al Wahda. The hosts remain winless after 13 matchweeks and earned two draws only, which left them at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Al Wahda will be looking to repeat their 6-0 win over Hatta in the first half of the season to reduce the gap with the top four, as they currently sit seventh on 19 points.

The opening day will conclude with the Al Jazira and Al Nasr derby at Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium, which is scheduled to kick off at 8:15pm. The Pride of Abu Dhabi are second on 27 points, three above fourth-placed Al Nasr, which makes Friday’s derby a crucial six-pointer, as both sides will be seeking to raise their tally and maintain their title chances.
