Al Wasl beat Sharjah to reach Arabian Gulf Cup semi-final

Al Wasl advanced to the semi-final of the Arabian Gulf Cup after beating Sharjah 2-0 in the second leg of the quarter-final at Zabeel Stadium on Tuesday.

Al Wasl came close to opening the scoring in the 37th minute, but Sharjah keeper Adel Al Hosani intercepted the ball before it reached Joao Figueiredo's head and the rebound was converted by Ali Saleh into the side-netting.

Al Wasl’s pressure paid off as Haboosh Saleh opened the scoring four minutes before the break. Hamad Al Bloushi’s cross found Haboosh inside the box and the latter fired home to put his side 1-0 up.

Ali Saleh came close to doubling his side’s lead during injury time, but his effort went just wide of goal as they headed into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

They, however, extended their lead in the early minutes of the second half. Ali Saleh was awarded a penalty kick after being brought down inside the box and Figueiredo converted from the spot to make it 2-0 for Al Wasl.

Haboosh Saleh missed a chance to net the third of the night in the 52nd minute, as his effort went over the bar.

The King tried to level the scoreline in the remaining minutes, but Marcus Vinicius failed to hit the target in the 63rd minute. Meanwhile, Al Wasl keeper Sultan Al Manthari impressed to secure a 2-0 win for his side.

Al Wasl will now clash with Shabab Al Ahli in a highly anticipated derby after the latter advanced to the semi-final with a 9-2 aggregate win over Khorfakkan.
