Five-star Sharjah sweep aside Al Dhafra

Welliton Soares netted a hat-trick as Sharjah romped to an impressive 5-0 victory over Al Dhafra at Sharjah Stadium in matchweek 4 of the Arabian Gulf League dubbed as “Flag Day Round”.

Sharjah were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute after Welliton Soares was brought down in the box. Igor Coronado stoop up to take the spot kick and he converted to hand his side a 1-0 lead.

On the other right of the field, Ahmed Mahmoud forced Adel Al Hosani into a save in the 25th minute, as the keeper denied Al Dhafra from netting the equalizer.

The King went looking for a second goal and Caio came close when his powerful effort smacked the woodwork in the 33rd minute.

The hosts did double their lead three minutes later. After a string of passes and an impressive teamwork, Luan Pereira’s long shot directed towards the goal fell into Welliton Soares’ path and the Brazilian forward tapped it into the net.

On the stroke of halftime, the hosts netted their third of the night. Coronado found the ball outside the box and completed his brace with a rocket into the top corner.

Sharjah needed just four minutes after the restart to grab their fourth goal. Khalid Ibrahim’s cross fell to Welliton Soares inside the box and the latter made no mistake scoring past Khaled Al Senani.

Al Dhafra attempted to reduce the deficit but had an effort from Suhail Al Mansoori denied by Al Hosani in the 52nd minute.

Four minutes after the one-hour mark, Majid Suroor launched a counterattack and sent a defence-splitting pass into Welliton Soares’ path and the 34-year-old beat his marker and blasted a left-footed shot past the keeper to complete his hat-trick. This wrapped up the action in Sharjah, with the hosts claiming all three points.

Sharjah now top the standings temporarily after raising their tally to 12 points, while Al Dhafra succumbed to their first defeat of the season and are frozen on seven points.
