Matchweek 4 roundup: Sharjah maintain perfect start

Matchweek 4 of the Arabian Gulf League saw Sharjah gain sole possession of first place after collecting their fourth straight win to raise their tally to 12 points.

 

Sharjah became the only team to get the full points off their first four games after earning a 5-0 home victory over Al Dhafra. A hat-trick from Welliton Soares and a brace from Igor Coronado handed the King the three points as they are now in sole possession of first place.

 

This marked the first defeat to Al Dhafra in the season after earning two wins and a draw in the previous rounds. The heavy defeat saw them drop to seventh place on seven points.

 

At Al Maktoum Stadium, Al Nasr swept Ajman aside with a 3-0 win to jump to second place on 10 points. A double from Antonio Jose and a goal from Ryan Mendes ensure victory for the Blues who remain undefeated.

 

On the other side of the field, the Oranges succumbed to their third defeat in the season to sit in 12th place on one point only.

 

Bani Yas lost 3-1 to Al Jazira at home to succumb to their first defeat of the season. Ali Mabkhout netted a brace before Joao Pedro reduced the deficit with 20 minutes to go. However, Imoh Ezekiel sealed a 3-1 win with a late goal. The Sky Blues dropped to third spot on nine points, while the Pride of Abu Dhabi remain undefeated and moved to fifth place and they are tied with fourth-placed Shabab Al Ahli on eight points.

 

Shabab Al Ahli grabbed an easy 3-0 win over Hatta at Al Awir Stadium to collect their second win of the season and maintain their unbeaten record, thanks to a hat-trick from Igor Jesus. Meanwhile, Hatta are 13th from three defeats and one draw.

 

Al Wahda sits sixth on seven points after coming from behind to edge Khorfakkan 2-1 at Saqr bin Mohammed al Qassimi Stadium. Ricardinho netted the opener for Khorfakkan and Tim Matavz equalized before in-form Ismail Matar netted the winner with around 20 minutes to go. 

 

Khorfakkan linger at the bottom of the table and remain the only team with no points after succumbing to four defeats.

 

After falling to a 3-0 defeat last week, Al Wasl returned to winning ways with a 3-0 away win over Ittihad Kalba, thanks to goals from Fabio Lima, Joao Figueiredo and Ronaldo Mendes. Al Wasl moved to eighth place on six points, while Kalba are 10th on three points only after suffering their third defeat of the season.

 

Meanwhile, Al Ain failed extended their winless run to three games after playing out a 1-1 draw with Fujairah, with Farley Rosa opening the scoring in the first 10 minutes and Fahad Hadid netting the equalizer for Al Ain in injury time. The Boss dropped to ninth place with five points only, while Fujairah collected their first point of the season to move to 11th place.

 

Matchweek 4 in numbers

 

Khorfakkan remain the only team with no points, however, matchweek 4 saw them open their scoring account after netting a goal against Al Wahda.

 

Bani Yas and Sharjah hold the best offensive performance in the league so far with 13 goals each, while Kalba, Ajman and Khorfakkan are the worst with one goal each. Meanwhile, Hatta have the worst defensive record after conceding 13 goals in four games, while Al Nasr maintained another clean sheet, having conceded only one goal in the league so far.

 

As a total of 21 goals were scored in all seven games, matchweek 4 saw an average of 3 goals per game.

 

After his hat-trick against Al Dhafra, Sharjah’s Welliton Soares raised his goal tally to six points at the top of the goalscoring charts. He’s followed by Bani Yas’Joao Pedro who has five goals to his name.

 

Sharjah, Al Nasr and Shabab Al Ahli earned home wins while Al Jazira, Al Wasl and Al Wahda won away from home.
